Day 37: Son Of Man
“If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, and if I ask you, you will not answer. But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
Luke 22:67-69
Jesus has been brought before the Jewish Council. Claiming to be the Christ was blasphemy, punishable by death and they are hoping to trap Jesus with their question. Jesus knows they will not believe the truth, and will not admit their real reason for asking him. Despite looking like the victim Jesus knows he will soon be "seated at the right hand of the power of God." He chooses to acknowledge who he is, knowing that this will lead to the cross. He uses words understood to refer to the Christ from Psalm 110:1 and Daniel 7.13 -14. The Daniel passage reads: "and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed."
Jesus, God's son, was willing to face crucifixion to achieve for us forgiveness of sins and a place in his Kingdom. This is the cost of our sin and the depths of his love for us. Hallelujah, what a saviour! We know that however our situation looks, he reigns in power.
