Day 38: Father, Forgive Them

“Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.”

Luke 23:34

At the cusp of death, it is simply phenomenal that Jesus intercedes for the very people who brutally nailed him to the cross. Jesus’ unfathomable love superseded the agonising pain and suffering he endured during his crucifixion for mankind.

Humanity’s fall from grace means that we repeatedly ‘nail him to the cross’ when we sin. Yet, Jesus, through his immeasurable love and compassion, advocates for us. This fulfils the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Yet He Himself bore and took away the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors” (Isaiah 53:12).

It is God who justifies! Though many would seek revenge and retribution amid injustice, Jesus teaches us to bless and show kindness to those who curse us and pray for those who mistreat us (Luke 6:28). Through this act of mercy, the Lord defines the depth of forgiveness we should hold on to throughout our lives. Despite our trials and tribulations, we must forgive and remember that God is our judge and defender.
