Day 4: My Whole Being Waits
“I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.”
Psalm 130:5-6
Are you good at waiting? Do you tap your foot impatiently as you wait for your turn from the end of the queue? Or are you able to wait serenely whilst your child takes an extraordinary amount of time to put their shoes on?
The length of time needed to wait is often crucial. I’m quite happy to wait two minutes for the kettle to boil before I can get my next cup of English Breakfast. But if I’m counting down the days and weeks as I wait for a special event to finally arrive, I can get impatient.
And the certainty of the outcome is also key. Waiting for some important test results from the doctor is far harder than waiting for the inevitable end of your shift to come round.
Lent is all about waiting. At Lent we wait forty days for the sorrow and mourning of Good Friday to finally arrive. Then we wait a bit more for the joy of Easter Sunday, when finally the waiting ends and we can celebrate Jesus’ victorious resurrection.
But it all points to another waiting, for when Jesus will return for us and we will stand before him redeemed. And even though we do not know how long we will have to wait for, we can be 100% certain of the outcome. Let us wait well this Lent, and beyond, with wonderful hope, confidence and eagerness.
