Day 5: Even As We Hope In You

“Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in you.“

Psalm 33:20-22

Platitudes about waiting abound: “Wait just a minute.” “Good things come to those who wait.” “What are you waiting for?”

But our Psalmist is not talking about any old waiting. This is waiting for the Lord. And we know that the Lord is God, and the Lord is Good.

Waiting for the Lord can be agonising. We’re so accustomed to getting things instantly that waiting strikes us as sheer inconvenience. And, aren't we meant to make things happen, to grab life by the horns? Yes and no. We’re certainly called to action. But we’re not called to think it all hangs on us. God is the Lord and not I. God could simply say "no" to my plans and that would be that.

We also know, though, that God is more in the business of saying "yes" than "no." God is good; his steadfast love is upon us; he is our help and our shield. And as we recognise this God as God and as Good, we know that waiting for him is worth it.

Knowing, Lord, that you are both God and Good, our souls thirst and wait for you.

Come Holy Spirit. Amen
