Day 15: Where Is Your Treasure?
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”
Matthew 6:21
This is a popular and often cited verse, but why? I think for two reasons; firstly, it is a beautifully constructed and poetic phrase, and secondly, it is great fun to apply it to those that we know who have more material possessions than us!
But I doubt that is how Jesus intended us to consider His warning against material possessions. It is too convenient to think it doesn’t apply to us because someone we know has more than us. That will always be the case. And in the UK, where an average wage will put you in the top few per cent globally, it’s probably not a wise benchmark.
So, what should our benchmark be?
Jesus. The radical generosity of Jesus should be our benchmark; a man who had ‘nowhere to lay His head’ and no material possessions as far as we know. And a God that gave up everything, including ‘His divine privileges’, to come to earth to be with us.
