Day 2: The Gates
“Lift up your heads, O you gates! Lift up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in.”
Psalm 24:9
Psalm 24 is such an exciting chapter, calling the children of God to come to His presence to worship. It expresses the supremacy of God, His creativity, love, invitation and glory. When I was meditating on the verse, the word highlighted to me was gates. The Hebrew word is Sa’ar, which means gate (of palace, royal castle, temple, court of tabernacle). So two things came to mind:
1. Revelation 3:20 says: “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.” The word “door” used here in Greek is thýra, which has a similar meaning to “gate” in Psalm 24:9.
2. Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem in Matthew 21. We see a fulfilment of scripture as the people welcomed Him with joy and worship by spreading their garments and tree branches to make way for Him.
David Guzik said repetition is for emphasis in Jewish poetry. In this passage, David repeats Psalm 24:7 to draw attention to the importance of looking up and opening the doors of our hearts for the Lord to come in to receive His blessings.
In reflection, David passionately pursued the Lord because he knew who God is. How do you see God? I invite you to open your heart to let the Lord in for an encounter, relationship, to taste and see that He is good. He wants to dwell in your heart to display His glory to the world and draw all people to Himself.
