Day 31: Rejoice Over You

“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

Zephaniah 3:17

The book of Zephaniah speaks of God moving against the rebellion and injustice of His people by sending them into exile. And yet, the plot twist is that this act of judgement becomes the means of purifying and healing the people. Yes, they will be exiled and Jerusalem torn down; but God will rebuild, re-populate and dwell amongst His people once again. Better still, His rescue plan is so gloriously effective that God will be the one who is rejoicing over his people. Remember, it should be the other way round, God’s people are supposed to be rejoicing over him! Wonderfully, God found a way to be among His people by exercising His justice in such a way that He was able to rescue his people from themselves and evil. God’s love was exercised in such a way that He can now rejoice over them with singing! This helps our understanding of God’s justice and love, our judgment and return from exile, truths displayed that first Easter.
