Nothing will be impossible with God
“What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. For the word of God will never fail.” Luke 1:36-37
The broad sweep of the bible is telling us one thing very clearly; that God wants to dwell amongst us, intimately like a marriage. He wants His Kingdom (heaven) and the earth to be one. And we see this divine intent played out in these verses.
God’s Kingdom breaks into earth through an angel, an ambassador from heaven, to tell Mary that His Kingdom is coming. No longer restricted to a tabernacle or temple. God is going to knit himself into humanity through her virgin birth and the Kingdom will break through in another way; Elizabeth has conceived despite her old age!
What does this tell us about His coming Kingdom? It comes through humans. Most notably through Jesus Himself but Mary and Elizabeth also have crucial roles to play too. It is through their obedience that His Kingdom has broken through.
What does it look like? It looks like new life (the birth of Jesus and John) and it looks like restoration (Elizabeth healed from her barrenness).
And it is not limited by our earthly perceptions of what is possible, just as Elizabeth didn’t think she could be restored and bear new life. Nothing is impossible with God.
